1984 Analysis

1984, Chapter Nine Analysis

In the beginning of part two chapter nine, Winston speaks of how a speaker at one of the hate week rallies had switched enemies in the middle of his speech. After doing so, the populace instantly began to blame Goldstein for supposedly misleading them. This incident shows just how naïve the common people living in this dystopia are. They didn’t ask any questions, and quickly blamed all of their problems on a man that probably had nothing to do with who Oceania is at war with. This particular incident reminds me of how sometimes it is very easy to alter the minds of others.

Sometimes it is very easy to make someone believe something that may not be true, especially if it is told to them multiple times. For instance, if you tell a fellow classmate that there was an essay for homework and you continue to talk about it, they will believe you. Also, the ancient myth of Santa Claus has for years been pushed into the minds of little kids. The more their parents talk about it, the more they believe in him. Even though these examples aren’t nearly as important as the many lies that have been told to those living in the dystopia that Winston lives in, it still shows how it is possible for humans’ minds to be altered, and this may be happening in the world that we live in now.
